I would like some still water…

Friday 16 th July 2010

A traveler has two occupations while travelling apart from dicovering a country: a place to sleep and a place to eat. For sleeping, I found but after a long day of walking, I'm tristy and hungry.

First step: towards a supermarket with the idea of a picnic near the old canal. The tap water is not for drinking, I'm forced to buy bottles. It was a very interesting and memorable experience: I seek the water, I find the alley after being subjected to three rows of very cheep beers...

The task is complicated because of different mineral waters available. I do not want sparkling water, or water with strawberry and even less flavored with cucumber and dill. Do Latvians drink still water?

I notify a green bottle but I prefer to verify its contents: I've never felt so stupid in front of a bottle of water. The label, despite a stylized waterfall on it, was written in Latvian, Estonian, Lithuanian and Russian ... I put it down and orient myself to a red cap, a little exasperated. I know the color of the cap plays a role, in Switzerland, the blue cap = sparkling water. Would I be lucky? Well, not this time, it was sparkling water. Now, I do not trust over caps' colors but just uden negazets, still water, thank you.

Now refreshed, I am going to fill my belly. Still at the supermarket, I head to the counter of a bakery seeing adorable little puff borekas that remind me of Israel. Rather difficult to choose, so I opt for a green, surely spinach, and another golden egg hoping it is not cheese. Luck was with me and pirozhki became my best friends.

But still, a real meal from time to time, does not hurt. Ahead to Pelmeni XL or self-service ravioli. First fast-food restaurant where you pay by weight, I mix the meat, vegetarian, fried style dumplings with sour sauce with tomato and gerkins malossol. It's hot and fast and fill my stomach. I come back but I dare not try the fluorescent pink soup. I then realized it was beetroots and dill... Really not my cup of tea. The food of the country did not convinced me yet and unless I overdose of ravioli, for now, I eat them and especially siera bez (without cheese)!
