I plan to travel to Latvia to shoot a documentary about the way of life of Latvians and foreigners and to understand their expectations, their motivations, how they manage their daily lives, their projects. The main theme is: how does it feel to be European?

I intend to produce several short videos using a digital camera. There will be several types of reports: first, three or four portraits of young Latvians invested in the local community, who have gone abroad, two or three portraits on foreigners and especially volunteers to understand their motivation, their integration their project in Latvia and finally two more general topics to present Latvia.

I travel for a month from July 14th to August 11th, 2010 in the country, discovering various regions and cities. My main steps are Riga, Cape Kolka, Ventspils, Liepeja, Jelgava, the Courland region, Rezekne and the region of Latgale. See map.

I lead at the same time, a sociological survey to understand the lifestyle in this country. Each interviewee received a detailed questionnaire to have a common base of questions and allow comparisons. See the questionnaire.

Right now, all the participants have different profiles: French working at the French cultural center of Riga, Latvian student in international studies, English, French, Austrian and Turkish volunteers, president of youth organization, a Latvian journalist ...
Every one tells his/her own way, his/her vision of the country and the goal is to create an original documentary with a cultural vision of Latvia.

This adventure of communication has two main aims:
- Firstly, to catch  several points of view to have plural views on European multiculturalism.
- Then, to have a look at the history of the country, which remains the duel between the parent generation, shaped by communism, and their children raised in a capitalist world and especially involved in the construction of the European Union.

This project is a personal challenge in order to sensitize youth to the European identity and the entire journalistic work around Latvia is being undertaken to realize a useful and practical idea.
